1) Please tell us about your Career Goals.

My short-term career goal is to secure my first full-time role in the tech industry. I’m actively pursuing positions in web development, business analysis, and software development. However, I’m open to any opportunity that lets me apply the skills I’ve gained through my education and internship. Additionally, I’m keen on exploring internships to better determine the best-fit role for me. I’m also actively searching for government pathways programs tailored for recent graduates.

2) Tell us about your internship (i.e. day-to-day responsibilities, special projects/clients and work culture).

In my role as a Code Sensei, I handle diverse responsibilities. These include setting up learning devices, guiding Code Ninjas by asking targeted questions and aiding in project development, updating progression logs for student needs, and actively engaging with students and parents during dojo classes and camps. I’ve also taken on a leadership role, overseeing fellow Code Senseis, managing dojo updates, and task assignments. During camps, I’ve alternated between leading and assisting, giving me the chance to teach and support students.

3) Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I had the chance to meet my current employer through my school’s spring career fair. After conversing with them concerning my experience with children through my volunteer activities at church, I quickly fell in love with their business’s mission of teaching kids how to code while having fun doing it. Having expressed interest, we set up an interview date which led to this internship.

4) Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBC Career Center

5) What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

The most enjoyable experience thus far has been getting to work with students. Many of them come in with their creative perspectives and it’s interesting to see how they each go about completing their coding projects. It has also been great working with the staff of Code Ninjas, from my employer to my fellow Senseis. It is a great environment, with each of us encouraging each other in our academic pursuits and future career plans.

6) How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I created a student progression tracker and planner guide, enhancing support for Sensei’s and student project development. This facilitated a clearer understanding of student levels for effective assistance. The guide streamlined student project design, aiding in character design, storyboard creation, and world-building.

7) What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience (i.e. Internship search, Resume or Interview tips)?

I suggest attending on-campus career fairs; that’s how I secured my current opportunity. When speaking with representatives, highlight both your career skills and personal passions. This way, you can gauge not only the company’s alignment with your career goals but also its support for your non-technical interests.
