Major and College: Aerospace Engineering at University of Maryland College Park
Internship Title: Mechanical Engineering Intern
Internship Site: Fabpro Technologies Inc.
1) Please tell us about your career goals.
As an Aerospace Engineer, my career goal is to climb my way up the Aerospace Industry and contribute to the diverse innovation and discoveries through industries like Boeing, LockHeed Martin, and eventually NASA.
2) Tell us about your internship (i.e. day-to-day responsibilities, special projects/clients and work culture).
I began my internship during the first week in June 2024. Every day, I report to the Engineering office where I get supervised and mentored by the CEO Antione, and the Lead Design Engineer, Curtis. I get assigned programming tasks on the design software currently used at Fabpro. So, day to day, I program designs and models and make inspections of CNC machined parts, or laser-manufactured and bent metal parts. I also engage in hands-on activities like assembling different metal parts according to customer’s provided specs and drawings. The Work culture is amazing. Every day I walk into the firm, everyone looks happy, motivated, and ready to go. One of the many cultures I enjoyed was the fitness workouts. The CEO believes that an employee is motivated to work and stay sharp when fitness is taken seriously. So, every day, we workout in the designated gym inside the building, and this is highly encouraged me to stay sharp and motivated.
3) Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I heard about the internship on the UMD’s career platform, Handshake. I would say a couple weeks before finals week, I came across the internship opportunity and message the POI, which was Mr. Troy. Within 24 hours, I got a response and a date to meet and talk. From there onwards, the process was smooth and encouraging.
4) Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?
Handshake or other job boards
5) What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
6) How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I made an impact by relieving the work load at the office. I was tasked with programming the models for a specific customer, while the Lead engineer could work on other things. Doing so, made things run smoothly at the office and reduced stress. I also helped with different task on the shop floor like assemblies and inspections.
7) What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience (i.e. Internship search, Resume or Interview tips)?
My advice would be to always keep up with updates from Handshake or whatever career platform is made available to such students. Also, try to build a rapport with the CEO or the supervisor. This is a good way to help build connections and professional networks.
